What is the symbolism of the Temple's logo?
The central feature of the logo is a golden triangle, representing the Temple's name (which in turn, refers to the center of Pittsburgh, known to locals as the "Golden Triangle").
Inscribed in that triangle are the Hebrew letters אל (alef-lamed), which are a frequent suffix for the names of angels (such as Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel) and which together have the numerical value 31, on which much of our studies in English Qabalah are based. The letters form one of the names of God (El) and the short form of the name of The Book of the Law (AL).
Surrounding the triangle are eighteen rays. 18 is the Hebrew Qabalistic value of the word חי (chai), meaning "living". Thus it is a lucky number in Judaism. Also, being divisible by three, the rays are symmetric around the sides of the triangle.
